The IRS issues a scam warning targeting taxpayers, especially recent immigrants. Victims are told by the scammers that they owe money to the IRS and that the money must be paid quickly. If the victim doesn't cooperate, they are threatened with arrest, deportation, or suspension of a business or driver’s license.
Scammers will use fake names and IRS badge numbers,
and they will generally use common names and surnames. Scammers will also be able to give the victim's Social Security number. Scammers can even replicate the IRS toll-free number on the caller ID, and victims will hear background noise that replicates
a call center.
